5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for stovetop, RV or camp stove, February 1, 2011
This review is from: Chinook Timberline Stainless Steel 3 Cup Coffee Percolator (Kitchen)
I prefer percolators over drip coffeemakers. My grandma never liked drip coffeemakers, and it took me many years to learn why. For starters I have never had to replace a stove top percolator because it was broken, but have owned countless expensive drip coffeemakers. Coffeemakers have carafes that break , a clock to reset, takes up counter-space, parts you can't get to to clean inside, buttons to fuss with, paper filters to replace. Mineral deposits can build up in the lines. After a few years, some drip coffeemakers start to taste acidic, but not my percolator. With a percolator you can adjust the perking time to get the exact brew strength you like. I also have an old electric percolator from the 1950's and it works great. My simple percolating pot lasts years longer, and the clean-up and maintenance is simpler. Now you can buy paper filters for percolators too, but I think that is a waste of money. For taste, I get a full bodied dark coffee, and I do not need to buy the high dollar... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars smaller than I thought, June 24, 2011

The workmanship and material quality of the percolator are very good. It makes excellent tasty coffer on stove top. Once it starts boiling, keep the heat low. I usually boil between 3-5 minutes.
Two things prevent me from ranking this product 5 stars:
1. The clear view top is made of resin instead of glass;
2. The size is good for one person and smaller for two people. I wish they make 4 cup size instead of 3 cup size.
Other than that, this is a great percolator for one person use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Percolate, March 5, 2011

I have tried 3 electric percolators, and they all burned out in the 1st 30 days. I thought this would be the trickwith no electic parts to burn out. This unit is just much too small. The 1st time I used it it percolated with plain water. After that it would not percolate. It also too small. I ended up with a larger stovetop from Meijers for $19.99 and it works perfectly. I was able to return this percolator to Amazon. They are great!!

MSR Mugmate Coffee/Tea Filter

Product Description

As a Seattle-based company, we're not at home on the trail without a cup of rich aromatic, freshly brewed cup of joe, which is why MSR introduced the MugMate coffee/tea filter. It's low profile enough to be stored in just about any mug or cup, and you won't have to worry about packing out soggy paper filters. The MugMate is capable of making café-quality brew for the outdoor java junky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Backpacking Coffee Maker, February 11, 2009
This review is from: MSR Mugmate Coffee/Tea Reusable Filter (Sports)
This little filter makes great coffee when you are backpacking. It is very durable and light weight and the fine metal mesh easily filters out all of the grounds. I have found the best way to use it is to make cowboy coffee by boiling your grounds and then use the filter when you pour the coffee in your cup. Depending on the size of your pot, you can make coffee for a few campers at the same time. Suggestion: The Finum Teeli Permanent Tea Filter is EXACTLY the same thing for half the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for brewing tea even when you're not camping, July 25, 2008

This review is from: MSR Mugmate Coffee/Tea Reusable Filter (Sports)
I've tested many loose tea brewers and this is the best (I've never used it to brew coffee so look to other reviews for an evaluation of how well it does that). The problem with most loose tea brewers is that the mesh is too coarse, letting through flecks of tea. This brewer has a very fine mesh. I'm not a camper, but I was in REI to buy some shoes and I spotted this and decided to give it a try since I'd never found a really satisfactory tea brewer. I was delighted. That was a couple years ago -- I've been using mine a couple times every day ever since -- So I feel MSR is missing the mark here -- they should be marketing this in kitchenware stores, not just in camping stores. I bought my second one from Amazon so I can have one for me and one for a guest. (I don't like to brew tea by using the same tea leaves for two cups -- the second cup is never as good as the first -- each tea drinker deserves a cup of tea made from fresh leaves, not leaves that have been used to brew another cup...
